William, better known as Willy to his friends and colleagues, is a proud 2014 alumnus of Evan E. Worthing High School. William is currently a senior studying mass communication, with an emphasis in multimedia journalism, and a graphic design minor at Jackson State University. Originally from the southeast side of Houston, Texas, William traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to begin his collegiate experience at JSU while also kicking off his goal of traveling the world. William discovered his niche for writing in his high school yearbook club, where he served as Editor-in-Chief for two years. During this time, he discovered his interest in photojournalism after being influenced by his mentor and yearbook advisor. On April 23rd, during his 11th grade year of high school, William purchased a Nikon D3100 and launched his freelance photography company, William Kelly Photography. Almost five years later, the company has expanded as William Kelly Media, now offering graphic design and videography services. Utilizing the creativity from his peers, William used his initials to rebrand the photography aspect of his company as Wonderful Kaptures. As a young entrepreneur, William prides himself on offering professionalism, relatability and quality services to his clients, who he likes to call the KapturesKrew. The KapturesKrew ranges from Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana and the Chicago area just to name a few.

During his short time at JSU, William has obtained a plethora of remarkable achievements at the age of 21. Some of his most notable achievements include earning rewards for In-Depth and Investigative Reporting and Best News Photos at the Mississippi Press Association (O.C. MCDAVID) Journalism Conference, being selected to represent Jackson State University in The Lens Collective 2017 Multimedia Conference & Workshop as the only African-American male, and having photos used on CBS Face the Nation Recap of Best Commencement Speeches. As a sophomore at JSU, William was designated to interview celebrities such as K Camp, Big K.R.I.T., and the cast of WGN’s “Underground.” Closing his junior year at Jackson State, William was hired as the City Reporting Intern at the Jackson Free Press after being recommended by the Dean of the School of Journalism and Media Studies. Shortly following this accomplishment, William was nominated by the Department Chair of the School of Journalism and Media Studies to participate in the study abroad program “Sri Lanka: An Emerging Jewel.” William traveled to Sri Lanka in August 2017 with the University of Mississippi Meek School of Journalism to produce a magazine, website and photobook. William was tasked with covering the culture and religion of the country, as well as the monsoons that affect the teardrop shaped island. Upon returning to the United States, William arrived back to Jackson where he is employed as the part-time City Reporter with the Jackson Free Press. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, William plans to pursue a career in multimedia journalism or continue his education and lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian.
